Aloha and Farewell From Hawaii ... We Will Miss You Ko Olina!

Well, I guess the time has come to say good-bye to all our friends at Ko Olina! Thanks for the Best of Times, and the Happiest of New Year's. If 2009 can stay as wonderful as it started, this will be the best year ever! Here are the final photos from our last couple of days in Hawaii...

We hiked to the top of Diamond Head for a spectacular view of Waikiki and Honolulu below! We did the entire uphill hike in about 20 minutes (they say it should take 45)!

You are probably wondering who caught the biggest wave on the North Shore? Certainly Todd or one of the boys, right? Not a chance. I missed the entire shot here, but you should have seen how HUGE this wave was that came crashing down on Janette!!! And luckily she survived as she was toppled head over heels with the entire beach panicking at first, and then laughing when she came out of it! When you get a chance, ask Janette about "the big one".

At the same beach (Waimea Bay) as the prior picture, there was also this great rock that we jumped off of. In this picture Jackson is making the jump!!

And Alec and I jumped off together, in 3-2-1, Woohoo!!! Look at the air we are catching! P.S. I hit bottom...

The boys continued to tear it up on the North Shore, to the point where they actually broke the skim board in two! Luckily for us, Costco took it back!!! Yes!!!!

What would a trip to Hawaii be without eating at Duke's. Duke's is a restaurant introduced to us by our favorite Hawaii travel buddies, Dallis and Carolyn Christensen, and we have loved it ever since! Although we still love our Duke's on Kauai, the salad bar at the Duke's Waikiki was WAY better!!! And of course, the Hula Pie is to Die for!

And you absolutely MUST pay tribute to and take a picture with the man himself, Duke Kahanamoku! We had to take this picture about 10 times, to the point where it became the family joke, "who wants to go take a picture with Duke!?"

And finally, I know for years now many of you have wondered whether or not I do... As you can clearly see in this photo, the answer is clearly yes...I do walk on water! (You may want to stand back from the lightning strike that surely is coming my way)

Thanks for sharing our time with us in Hawaii! We had a blast and hope that perhaps one day, we can all go there together and get lei'd! Todd, you are awful!

Much has been said about how much wood a Woodchuck would chuck if that Woodchuck could chuck wood. But I'm thinking if I am the Woodchuck, even if I could chuck wood... I'd probably hire it out to someone to chuck for me? That way I can focus my time on more important things, like that cute girl that sells sea shells down by the sea shore!!!

Aloha from Hawaii - New Year's Eve...a.k.a. Wahini Wednesday!

Welcome to Wahini Wednesday! Yes it's New Year's Eve on Oahu, and we decided it would be a good day to head over to Pearl Harbor....

Here is Janette and the boys at Pearl Harbor. The USS Arizona Memorial is out in the Harbor, just to the right of, and above Alec's left shoulder.

Here they are again actually out on the Memorial. It was a really cool experience, and sad to think of all those people who lost their lives on December 7th, 1941. It was cool for Jackson because as you recall, he was born on December 7th.

Here is a picture of the actual USS Arizona Memorial that sits on top of the sunken Arizona that still sits there in the water. It is eery to see the oil still leaking up to the top of the water after all these years, and to think that 900+ men are still entombed in that ship.

For New Year's Eve, we decided that we would go to a Luau. Here is Janette all ready to go!

And the boys were primed and wiley with our new Island Tribal Tattoos!

Hey Jack! How about a good spear throwing competition! Actually, it was Alec who stuck the spear in the target 2 times in a row while all of us other guys and gals (and there were about 30 people trying) couldn't get it to stick even once! Wait to go Al! Collect some more Shell Lei's....

I don't even know what this was called, but Janette and a group of other folks were spinning these Ball on Rope things and dancing to Hawaiian music? Personally, I think these are ancient Hawaiian tools to keep the men in line!

Now that is what I am talkin' about! I'd be smiling too!!! Nice Coconuts, eh? And you should see those hips move!

The fireworks at the hotel were awesome! I have never seen a fireworks display over Palm Trees and the ocean! It was really cool!

Aloha from Hawaii - Tiki Tuesday

I know, I know! I am a couple of days behind! But the connectivity over here is so dang slow! So, hopefully I can catch you up a bit on the past few days here at lovely Ko Olina! Here are a few highlights from Tuesday...

We started the day with all you can eat pancakes at Hapa Grill, our favorite little breakfast cafe just down the road! Mmmmmm.....Coconut Syrup!!!

Then it was back to the hotel to spend the morning and early afternoon down at the beach. Here are the beach bums in their natural habitat...

After all of that time in the sun, there is nothing better than driving half an hour north to the town of Haleiwa for a delicious Matsumoto Shaved Ice, with vanilla ice cream in the bottom. Once again, the Hawaiian Delight was the best flavor of all....Banana, Coconut and Pineapple.

Then we drove about 3 miles down the coast in search of "Lost" beach, which is the beach where they shoot the camp and beach scenes of Lost, which is one of our favorite shows. Here we are on the beach, but how can we be sure? Alec and Chandler, run down the beach and see if you can see anything else....

Ah Yes! It is true! Here is the actual Lost base camp set where all of the base camp scenes are filmed. It was blocked off with bright orange fencing and had a 24 hr/day guard. The hull of the plane is back in the upper left of this photo, along with the orange tarp covered hut where Juliette operated on Jack's appendix. Sawyer's tent is back to the right, and the church that Mr. Echo was building is just 30 yards down the beach! We love our Lost! They will start shooting the Final Season in this very spot starting Monday the 5th, the day after we leave! :-(

We ended the day back in Haleiwa for some fine Hawaiian food...? Of course not! It was great Mexican food at Cholo's, where the fish tacos were made with real Ahi Tuna! Very Good Stuff! Well, that was a pretty good Tiki Tuesday! Back to the hotel to sleep...after all, it is like 2am in Utah!

So the fun continues...We are loving it here in Paradise. These pictures below are actually in the wrong order though! You should start from the bottom, and then work your way back up!!!

We ended the day with a lovely Hula Dancing show in the hotel lobby! It was a GREAT day!

We spent the afternoon over in Hale'iwa where we had to grab some shaved ice with ice cream from Aoki's (Matsumoto's had a 30 minute line!) I got the Hawaiian Delight!

We then drove over by the North Shore. The waves were small today, but the mountains in the center of Oahu are beautiful as the clouds seem to hit and hang onto the top of the hills.

The boys love to Skim board at the beach!! Thank goodness for Costco and the Skim Boards they sell here in Hawaii!

Of course we went and found a great beach! Jackson is the King of the Boogie board! The waves were HUGE!!! I got beat up good!

If you look close, you can see the bigger fish kickin butt on the little fish! What we all do for a free meal!!!

We started the day with a 7:30 a.m. feeding of the fish down in the bay! Jackson was trying to figure out which fish we were seeing from the 30 fish shown on his card!

The day started with a beautiful sunrise over the lagoon! We knew it was goint to be a GREAT day!

Well, we made it to Hawaii! It is sooo beautiful here! This is our first time to Oahu where we are staying at the JW Marriott Ko Olina. The weather is perfect at 80 degrees and the Pacific Ocean is beautiful here! We have been to Maui and Kauai, but never stayed here on Oahu. So far, so good!

Jackson was such a great baby! And has always remained Janette's "Baby" of the family.

Then Jack started growing into such a fine boy!

And he kept on growing and having fun

with his family who loves him very much!

Although he still eats like when he was 2!

Halpin Halloween Highlights!!!

After seeing the darling pictures of Amie's girls over the past few Halloween's I decided to pull out our photos. I wasn't able to find all of the years, but most of them are here. I can't believe how fast time flies. I just love looking at these pictures...it brings back so many great memories.

Here are the two best buddies ... Batman & Robin. We were living on Locust Lane at the time. This is by far my FAVORITE picture!!!

This was 1996. We were living in Sugarhouse. Chandler was in his first year of pre-school, and Alec was excited to go and watch Chandler's Halloween parade.

1997: Our first Halloween at our new home in Bountiful. We were so excited to have a house that was our very own. Todd was actually flying home from somewhere this Halloween, and the boys got lots of comments from people at the airport. (That was back in the days where you were allowed to wait at the gate for your loved one to come home.) Who would have ever known how much time Todd would be spending at the Salt Lake Airport back then...

1998: Chandler was in Kindergarten. He was by far the cutest Court Jester in the class!!

Same year, Alec was in his 2nd year of pre-school. He was a sweet treat that year!!!
1999: Our first Halloween with Pirate Jack!!! Chandler's Dracula looked more like Eddie Munster. Alec was such a scary Skeleton.

This was either 2001 or 2002. I haven't been able to find a couple of years worth of pre-digital photos. Here are my superheros. I had to get at least one more good year out of the Batman costume.

2003: We had moved from Bountiful to SLC, and were living in an apartment at this time while we were finishing our house. This was the week that Todd's wonderful Aunt Diane passed away. We were at her viewing this Halloween, so my sister Claudia & her husband Brian took the boys trick-or-treating for us. The girl in the picture is my niece Hailey. We miss you Aunt Diane :)

2005: Jackson was in 1st grade, Alec was in 6th, and Chandler was a big 7th grader.

same year, I love this picure of Jackson. I think the eyebrows made the costume!!!

2006: Chandler and Alec wanted to trick-or-treat, but didn't want to get dressed up. This was the best I could do with 2 unwilling participants. Alec actually told people he was a hunter. I do have to say, I love the Nacho Libre costume on Jackson.

Ah Yes! It is that time of the year again! The time when leaves change? The sound of football or the first snow storm perhaps? NO....IT'S CRAZY HAIR DAY! Here is our good boy Jackson on Crazy Hair Day. We wandered up to Smith's Marketplace the night before and grabbed a can of red and a can of black. And it looks like it turned out pretty good! You go Jack!

How 'Bout Them Utes!!!

As a devote Utah Man and fiercly loyal U of U Alum, I must say how awesome it is after the "Urban Era" to see those mighty Utes rolling again! Undefeated and lining up again for another BCS bowl! Yes, I am dreaming of the BCS-Bust again! Remember, after all those years of BCS-Buster discussions and prognostications, it was our Utah Utes who were the first to BUST! And Bust again they will! And what is even more fun is that other than the TCU game coming up, it looks like it could be that BYU vs. UTAH game in November with both teams undefeated, both teams in the Top 10, and going head-to-head for the MWC Championship and hopefully a great BCS Bowl and Opponent! And so I must pay tribute to my Utes, and especially King Louie, and say, "Great Job Kyle and GO UTES!!!"

Copy Cats

Alright...I have a bone to pick! And I will start it "Jerry Seinfield" style. What is with people who never compliment you on anything in your life, your house, your work, your weight, your styles, your EVERYTHING, and then end up copying every single thing that you do? And to add salt into the wound, they ask YOU if you have ever seen or heard of the very thing that they copied you on!!!!!! And then when they are asked by others where they came up with that idea, they respond that it was just some great idea or inspiration that THEY HAD!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!??

As such, I had to use this moment to identify what those type of people really are...which is unimaginative, can't think for themselves, selfish, ungrateful, take-take-take COPY CATS!!! So here's to all you Copy Cats out there making your way through the world off of the ideas and hard work of others!!! Hey, here's a thought. Why don't you at least offer one single compliment to the person that you are copying, or perhaps at least say thank you to the person who constantly shares their ideas with you that enriches and adds to your life! Particularly if you are a Copy Cat that never offers anything back in return. Heaven forbid that you ever come up with anything yourself, and then offer that to others for all they have given you.

Remember and be Warned...."Tis better to Give, than Receive!"

Ode' to Max

This is my very good friend Maxwell Smart. But we just call him Max. What I love about Max is that every time he sees me, he quickly runs up to me, with his tail just a wagging, and without missing a beat, he sends a good squirt of pee sailing through the air! Which of course means that he is so excited to see me that he can barely control his bladder! Nobody else, not even my sweet wife Janette, is ever that excited to see me! Of course, that would be kind of gross....

Now the second thing upon seeing me that Max requests is that I get him a "TREAT!" He will talk to me and tell me he wants a treat, he will jump at my legs and face to tell me he wants a treat, and he will run around until I get him his treat! And what treat is this that drives my good friend Max to go crazy? Why a delicious Pup-O-Roni stick of course! Mmm, Mmm. And Max can do many tricks to get that treat! He can roll over, play dead (bang!), dance and dance, play patty cake, high five, shake hands and a couple others I am sure to forget. He is very talented I must say.

Max also loves to go for a ride in the car! And you have to look at him and say the following: "You...You Want.....You Want.........You Want To Go For...................You Want To Go For A Ride In The Car!!!???" To which he begins to freak out and run around and bark at you saying, "Yes! Yes! I Love to Go for Rides in Cars! I love to smell those PepperDukes!" He loves to stick his little head out the window and smell and watch for the other PepperDukes, which is Christensen-ism and dog talk for "other dogs." "Look Max, there's a Pepper Duke!" Where? Where?

Other things that Max likes besides eating treats and going for a ride in the car include some of the following; sleeping by Carolyn, getting his belly scratched, sniffing around the yard, playing with "special friend" (his little stuffed dog that he carries around in his mouth), going to Lake Powell, laying with Todd and watching golf, and of course taking baths (NOT), Jack Stringham (NOT), Fireworks (NOT) and beautiful baby Hannah who is now beginning to crawl and chase Max around!

So this is my Ode' to my good friend Max. I love Max, and he loves Me! We are bestest buddies, and outside of his obsessive addiction to his Mother, Carolyn (Where is she?...I must be with her at all times!), Max likes hanging out with his buddy, Todd. He is my very good boy! "Hey Max, you want....you want to.... you want to go for a ride!?"

This is one of our 2 favorite weekends of the year! Especially since it is Fall! It is so nice to listen to church leaders keep us on course in our lives! We love to listen to The Prophet, President Monson, and love his counselors too! Todd also loves going to Priesthood Meeting on Saturday night with Chandler, Alec, his Dad and Brothers! Of course, it is also the great food they go get afterwords that is fun too. It is a good reward for Chandler and Alec. Anyway, we hope you all have a great weekend, and if you get the chance, enjoy General Conference.

To Be Young and In Love

Well here we are then, and here we are now. And all I have to say is... I may be missing some hair, and added a few pounds (or 50)... but I still got it baby!

Today is Alec "Burly" Halpin's 15th Birthday! Yes, he couldn't wait to get down here to earth, so he came exactly one year and one week after Chandler was born, and he's been rockin' ever since. Now why "Burly" you ask? Because anyone who has the upper body strength that Alec has is referred to as a burly man! For example, when Alec was 9 months old, we couldn't keep him in his crib, because he would just pull himself up and over the rails! At 11 months, he would open the cabinet drawers, pull himself up onto the counter top, then climb up on top of whatever appliance was available so he could the pull himself up on top of the fridge! All so he could get at the Cookie Jar! That's why we have always called him Burly! Alec loves to play video games. When he was just five or six years old, we had just purchased a new video game for him to play on his Nintendo. A couple of hours he and Chandler came in and Alec said, "I finished the game". To which Janette and I replied, how do you know you finished the whole game? In true Alec fashion, he responded, "because after I finished the last stage, it said THE END!" Duh Mom and Dad! Now Alec love Rock Band where he became so good at the drumming, that we had to go and buy him a real drum set. This was back in June. Four days later I heard some great drumming going on downstairs from Alec's room. So I went down to see which one of his friends was so good at playing the drums. To my utter astonishment, there was Alec with his headphones on banging away to what ended up being a perfect rendition of some song by The All American Rejects! That's Alec for you! Happy Birthday Boy! Your Mom and Dad and Brothers love you and hope you have a great day!

Happy 16th Birthday Chandler!

Today is Chandler "Chubby" Halpin's 16th Birthday! So let me just start by saying, "Clear the Roads and Stay off the Streets!" because Chandler has his learner's permit! What once was a cute little baby boy has know grown into a very tall man child! Oh, to go back to the days when Chandler used to call his brother "Al" and used words like "tutdown" when he scored, or "Ho-Ho" for what does Santa say. Now it's words like "homey", "True Dat", and "I is" when he talks. But boy do we love him and are so glad he is our boy! Happy 16th My Boy! - Dad

We can't believe that we actually have a child in high-school. It seems as if he was just born. I remember the day quite well. After going into labor with him, Todd took me to the hospital around 11:00 pm. After 3 hours of being monitored, and no dialation whatsoever, the doctor sent me home, and told me to attend my previously scheduled appointment the following afternoon at 3:00 pm. We got back to our little apartment in the avenues around 2:30 am and Todd was exhausted!!! He laid down and went to sleep, and I tried to relax in the living room. The pain was coming quicker and stronger. After a few hours of this (and talking to dead people because I was delirious), I woke up Todd and begged him to take me to the hospital. He reminded me that the Doctor told us to wait for our 3:00 appointment. Again, the pain was horrible, so after watching me cry for what seemed like forever, we again got into our car and drove to Cottonwood hospital. We arrived around 7:45 am, and at 9:45 am our sweet little boy was born!!! HE WAS PERFECT!!! We couldn't be more proud of our wonderful son Chandler, and we love him so much!!!! Luau's, Lei's, and Love!

Well, after all of the weeks of preparation, Janette's 40th Birthday Luau has come and gone! We had a really great time and I would like to say "thank you so much" to all of you who came to celebrate Janette's big day! I was thinking that many of you have been with Janette even a lot longer than I have, and I know she LOVED having you there! The most important thing in our lives are Family and Friends. And we have the BEST in the world!

So, the Food was Great (thanks Moki's Hawaiian Grill), Everyone got Lei'd, no one Lost an Eye, and only Half of the Tiki Torches burned to the ground! I'd say all in all....NOT TOO BAD! Here are some of the Highlights....

Well, he says he is a little bit Rock-n-Roll...but it certainly is not my kind of Rock-n-Roll! But, as you can see, we celebrated Janette's 40th Birthday down in Las Vegas with Donny Osmond. Actually, it was Donny and Marie, but you can see what Janette thinks of Marie! She loudly stated, "the sign in this picture should read 'Donny & Me'!" Donny put on a good show, and even danced on top of the table next to us as Janette desperately tried to "reach out and touch someone"!

So I have now officially survived my 3rd Donny concert because I LOVE my wife so much that I make sure she gets to see her "boyfriend" every now and then. It was actually a great show and we had a lot of fun down there at the old Flamingo Hilton! We even saw some actual live flamingos! Go figure! Anyway, I would highly recommend you go see those wholesome Osmonds down there in Sin City!

Today is Janette's 40th Birthday!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY JANETTE! It was 40 years ago that Janette was born at St. Mark's Hospital at 9:10 p.m. She was a 6 pound 8 ounce bundle of Joy! Upon asking her how she felt being 40 today, she said "Same as yesterday." O.K. But you are 40 now!!

We are sitting at the SLC airport on our way to Las Vegas to see Janette's boyfriend tonight. That's right, Mr. Donny Osmond. I mean, I figured that I might as well make sure she is with her boyfriend on her big day, right? Well Janette, you may be moving into a new decade, THE 40's, but you just keep getting more and more beautiful every year, and I, your husband, love you with all my heart!! Be sure to call her and wish her a HAPPY DAY (even though we will be in sunny Las Vegas!)

So I am sitting here with Janette showing her how to put in her daily blogs. And do you know what the only thing she asked me? "How do you get the pretty pictures and borders on our blog site?" Well I don't know, but I am sure we will get it figured out soon! By the way, tomorrow is Janette's 25th Birthday! Can you believe after all of these years, she is only 25!?
